Through the main building, visitors will be able to access the original building and library. It is the architectural design that is characteristic of many Cape Cod homes and shops, and what you’d find upon your arrival to Where the Sidewalk Ends Bookstore. So much so, they have an entire building dedicated to young children, as well as a second floor for older children and teens. My kids absolutely loved going through all the sections of books and viewing all the toys and knickknacks on display. However, nothing prepared me for the exquisiteness of Smith College’s Neilson Library. Since its establishment in 1909, the library has serviced the women of Smith in becoming some of the most prominent and influential women in history. Commissioned by architectural designer Maya Lin, the library underwent a full remodeling in 2017, with doors opening in March 2021. On my visit to Northampton, I was able to get a glimpse of the newly launched library. Combining old and new, Lin designed an architectural masterpiece that showcases comfort, clean lines, and beautiful simplicity. The large windows bring in a wealth of openness and airiness that are both calming and welcoming. On the first floor, you’ll find the Browser room and Central Service Point; along with a large mural that is beautiful and inviting. If you follow the stairs slightly downward, you’ll also find the Compass Café; where you can load up on coffee and to-go treats to fuel your reading and studying sessions. Throughout the second and third floors you’ll find special collections, and private study and reading rooms. For those in need of self-reflection, you can find your peace in the Reflection Room provided, where you can meditate or bask in tranquility and quiet. If you’re in need of the outdoors while you read and work, head up to the fourth floor where you will find the outdoor terrace. If your little one(s) needs to expend some energy after a day of learning and exploring, then take them to Pulaski Park or Look Memorial Park. While Pulaski Park has a more urban feel and is free of charge, Look Memorial Park houses a splash pad, miniature golf, pedal boats, tennis and pickleball, playgrounds, and a steamer train and wildlife center. A small fee of $5 per vehicle from Monday through Thursday, and $10 on the weekend is needed to enter the park. However, if you have a military ID, entry into Look Memorial is free. As the newest museum on the quad, it is housed with an array of interactive and colorful exhibits. Walking through the first floor of the museum’s imaginative and visual displays, made us feel like we were strolling through the pages of Dr. Seuss’s work. While the second floor, allowed us insight into the man behind the books, generations have grown to love. If you’re in need of a break and want to delve into your own creative genius, The Cat’s Corner on the lower level is a perfect place to borrow a book to read or draw. Despite its smalls size, the museum offers an array of learning and interactive opportunities for all. Our favorite was the Leonardo DaVinci exhibit; it reminded us of our time spent at the DaVinci Museum in Rome, Italy. In 1891, James Naismith invented what would become one of the most watched and beloved sports in American history—basketball. As the birthplace of the sport, the city of Springfield is also the home of The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. If you or your young ones are basketball history buffs or enthusiast, then the hall of fame is an excellent place to visit. It is fitted with memorabilia of greats, such as Shaquille O’Neal, Michael Jordan, and Naismith himself. Libraries, Bookstores, & More: Hartford, CT - The Mark Twain House & Museum Tucked away in the Nook Farm neighborhood of Hartford at the top of a hill, sits the illustrious home of Mark Twain. Boasting 11,500 square feet and 25 rooms, sprawled across three grand floors, the home of Mark Twain was designed by New York architect, Edward Tuckerman. It was fitted, not only with the best that the Victorian Era had to offer, but with the finest adornments and intricacies you would expect from a man of his standing to possess. So, what does one get out of visiting the home of one of America’s literary finest? If you take the tour with a historic guide, like we did, you get the chance to be transported back into the life, mind, and history of Mr. Twain. During our visit, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour we received with his “daughter,” Susy Clemens. As a writer and author, taking a walk through his family home was invigorating, and humanized the man—separating myth from legend. So, imagine my surprise when I realized whom Mark Twain’s famous neighbor was. An avid abolitionist and moderate suffragette, she was one of the most prolific novelists of her time. Some may argue that her most famous novel (or infamous), fed the flames to what would become the American Civil War. Did you guess the author? If you’re thinking about the writer of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe, then you are correct. Known to those who loved her as Hattie, Stowe was one of the most influential novelists of her time. Like The Mark Twain House & Museum, the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center is a living museum that marks a period within the author’s life. At The Nook Café, you can enjoy a treat of assorted drinks, sandwiches, and baked goods, while you take time to read the writings of some of America’s greatest literary masters. Another place to visit is Bushnell Park. Filled with a landscape of mature trees, sculptures, and an abundance of sitting areas, there are lots of nooks one can find to have a leisurely read. If you want a break from reading and are in the Hartford area during the winter, the park offers free ice skating for families to enjoy. However, come early because slots fill up quickly. Another great attraction to visit in the park is the Bushnell Park Carousel—there you can get your fill of rides on an old-fashioned carousel for $2. Hot chocolate and snacks are also sold there for a reasonable price. With a playground right next door, the kiddos can let off some much-needed steam and energy. The center is filled with a myriad of activities and exhibits that can keep young ones busy for hours. Our favorite by far was the Butterfly Exhibit. If your children still have energy to burn, then head over to The Children’s Museum. In need of a slower and more relaxed pace for the day? Then the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum and Elizabeth Park Conservancy is for you. At the Wadsworth, you can surround yourself with the beauty of both contemporary and European art through the ages. While the Elizabeth Park Conservancy allows for a stroll in beautiful and lush botanical garden. Located in West Hartford, the shopping center is fitted with luxury shops and some fine dining options. During our visit, we had a wonderful dinner at Brio Italian Grille and tea at The Green Teahouse. Based on the Lewis Carroll classic, Alice in Wonderland, is a shop fit with whimsical and masterfully placed design, that is filled with youthful books, gifts, and an assortment of teacups that would put any café to shame. Even so, unlike other cafes, Alice in the Village provides a variety of drinks made with specialty teas that would tickle anyone’s fancy. While it's assortment of light desserts will make you feel as if you’re having your very own high tea. We found it a great place to stop with the children for some light snacks and drinks, which were delicious. If you guessed the movie, Mystic Pizza, then you are correct. The restaurant in the film is still a staple and gem of the town. Head over to The Mariner for some fresh and delicious seafood. The shelves are lined with books of such literary greats as Zora Neale Hurston, as well as Contemporary authors like Amanda Gorman. Although small, the blue shutters, quaint surroundings, and golden sconces, speaks to its duality of life during Faulkner’s day and the modern world. Upon entering, you are met with mounds of books that extend from floor to ceiling. The smell of them permeates your senses as you walk through the maze they form. Just off the Quarter is Jackson Square, where you’ll find benches to sit and enjoy the stunning foliage in the garden, or you can take a walk-through the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral. You could also take a visit to New Orleans City Park; there you’ll find a picturesque landscape filled with lush gardens and a place where fairytales come to life in Storyland. From soul food to Creole and Cajun cuisine, there are a multitude of places in the French Quarter to dine—however, our favorite was The Market Café. With its position on the Mississippi River and proximity to the Gulf Coast, New Orleans is also home to wonderful seafood; while we were there, we tried our hands at a seafood boil at HIEUX Boil Seafood House and Clesi’s Seafood Restaurant & Catering, to which we were not disappointed. As the land of pralines and beignets, we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to visit Café Du Monde, where the beignets are warm, and the hot chocolate is hot. Libraries, Bookstores, & More: Austin, TX - Strength in Books Titled after a poem by Judy Grahn, what is known now as BookWoman was once called, The Common Woman Bookstore—and was started forty-five-years ago in an upstairs shop on Guadalupe. In time, the store eventually adopted its current name and moved to the North Lamar location that it is still housed in today. The best word to describe BookWoman upon pulling up to the store is …unsuspecting. Like many storefronts in Austin, it pulls no fuss and stops in respect to presentation and architecture; but what it lacks in opulence, and simplicity in design, it makes up for, in its selection of books. As a woman, when walking in to BookWoman, you get an eerie feeling that you have arrived—your surroundings of voices of women, past and present, echoes in the pages of books sprawled across the walls, gives you a sense of home and strength. Exploring the Museum When first entering the grounds of the museum, you’ll be met with a winding road decorated with flags of Presidents past that leads you towards the museum’s entry way. While driving in, there was plenty of parking to be found, which wasn’t too far from the entrance of the museum and allowed us the opportunity to get a view of our surroundings and the beautiful Simi Valley. Once inside, you can either pick-up your reserved tickets or purchase tickets (*note: a membership purchase allows for reciprocity for any Presidential Library around the country); special exhibits require additional purchase, and during our visit, this was specifically reserved for the World War II exhibit. After obtaining your tickets, you’ll be ushered through to a viewing room with a hologram of Reagan himself, by one of the many museum curators on board that made our experience great. Yes. That’s right. Thee. Air. Force. One. The very Air Force One that Reagan utilized during his Presidency. In fact, the “Flying White House” as it has been called isn’t the only presidential transportation to explore there—the library also includes the Marine One helicopter and President Reagan’s 1984 parade limousine! Despite its features as a living museum and library filled with White house artifacts during Reagan’s presidency and replicas of what would have been found during his lifetime, the museum also has some solemn aspects that may not be suitable for very young children. It is a replica of an actual pub that Reagan visited during a diplomatic trip to Ballyporeen, Ireland, and comprises the pub’s original décor of from the 1980s. Looking for breakfast or lunch with a view? Then head over to Malibu Pier for some farm-to-table deliciousness from Malibu Farm Pier Café. If you’d rather enjoy the smell and beauty of old books, take a visit through the Library Exhibition Hall, where you can see the works of such literary master’s as Thoreau and 15th century writer, Geoffrey Chaucer. However, be sure to check the website for closures before visiting. If the library is closed, no worries, you can still get a glimpse of some of the literary works the Huntingtons collected in the Huntington Art Gallery, which was once the home of Henry and Arabella Huntington—you can have a peak of their personal library, as well as European art and beautiful stained-glass windows. However, if you’re concerned about the bustling energy of little hands and feet among priceless artifacts and art, fret not, there is a Children’s Garden fit for the imagination of any little. To get to the garden you’ll have to take a trip through the Conservatory—its interactive science center and rainforest like atmosphere hosts a myriad of exhibits children will enjoy. Once you’re done with your time there, go to the garden to expand your play—fit with splash pads and kid size doors, the Children’s Garden is a place where a child’s imaginative play will soar. Just fifty-five miles east from the desert town of Palm Springs, is the sub-tropical town of Perris, California and the Southern California Railway Museum—where Thomas and Friends stopped by to give patrons a peak into to the literary characters of The Railway Series. A sleepy town that sees many passersby, like many settlements that sprouted during the “boom period” of Southern California, Perris, once used for its pastures during Spanish and Mexican post, saw an influx of European settlers during the 1880s. Due to the expansion of the California Southern Railroad, the development of a train depot that connected the cities of Barstow and San Diego in 1882, gave Perris a period of rapid settlement and growth, causing the expansion and eventual incorporation of the town, which was named in honor of Fred T. Perris, chief engineer of the California Southern Railroad. With the closing of the station, the town, which now houses a lake and recreation area that is ripe for boating, hiking, and nature walks, as well the March Field Museum, turned its former train depot into the Southern California Railway Museum, which contained the Day Out with Thomas, event. Event organizers advise that you arrive an hour early before your scheduled train ride, so that you could enjoy the rest of what they have to offer (more on that later), and I would have to agree. However, if you are like our family, and have a knack for running behind, don’t worry, you can still have a great ride with Thomas—you and your party will just be directed to the late boarder’s line, and will make your way on when room is available. The ride itself is roughly fifteen-minutes, on an air-conditioned, comfy coach cabin, that went just outside of town and back to the museum, on one of the functional trains; lending a much-needed break from the town’s Mediterranean like climate. During the Holiday season, this train also does an hour-long ride, filled with Christmas cheer to recreate the magic of The Polar Express, classic children’s story. Once a movie set, the old western style buildings and homes are now part of this living film museum, that makes up the crafted western settlement. Although it may appear to be a ghost town, the structures that make up the living museum also doubles as a community, with shops, entertainment, and real live horses—so be mindful and respectful of your surroundings, as horses have the right of way and residents are plentiful. If your littles need a break from walking and exploring, there is a sand pit and mining station also available for their enjoyment. During the holiday season, dinosaurs are dressed to impress with gear that even Santa would be proud of. Tucked in the depths of orange groves full and bright of oranges ripe for the picking, was the olive grove of Ojai Olive Company. While the husband and I were taken aback by their selection of tasty olive oil to choose from, our children were more interested in the number of hammocks and swings, that were sprawled across the property, which were perfect for a stop and good read. The picnic tables lent an opportunity to enjoy not only a great packed lunch, but a marvelous, tasty spread of olive oil that the Ojai Olive Company had to offer. While we were there, no one rushed us about, and we were able to enjoy the property for its beauty and relaxation.
